Summer Fitness Series at Northwest Missouri State University



Summer Fitness Series

During a span of 10 weeks, Northwest is hosting four fitness challenges via the fitness app MoveSpring. Employees may choose their own fitness level and personal goals for each challenge. The intent of the summer challenges is to prepare for a 5k on Saturday, Aug. 26, on the Bearcat Trail. The 5k is open to all employees and their families.


Challenge 1: Get Moving, June 19-July 2

  • Our goal for two weeks is to get everyone moving. Mileage is low in this first challenge. You will know you have completed the challenge by meeting the personal goal you set four days per week for the two-week challenge.

  • In the MoveSpring App, we have set recommended goal distances for each fitness level and challenge: Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced.


Challenge 2: Increasing Distance, July 3-16

  • Our goal for another two weeks is to begin increasing our distance, beyond what we were doing in the first challenge. You will know that you have completed the challenge by meeting your personal goal four days per week for the two-week challenge.


Challenge 3: Interval Training for Increased Fitness, July 17-August 6

  • This is a three-week challenge, and we will be increasing our distance as well as adding intervals to enhance our training and fitness. You will know you have completed the challenge by meeting the personal goal you set for three days per week during the three-week challenge.


Challenge 4: Bettering your 5K Distance Time, Aug. 7-26

  • This is a three-week challenge. We will again increasing our distances. But, per the longer distance goals leading up to the 5k, fewer days are required to meet the challenge. You will know you completed the challenge by meeting your personal goal two days per week during the three-week challenge. As with all challenges, you are encouraged to get in steps on days that are not part of the challenge. We provide a recommended off-day distance for each fitness level for each challenge.)

  • It is recommended that you get in steps at least five days per week and let your body rest at least one day per week.


Earn a free tank top or T-shirt!

All employees who successfully complete the summer fitness series will receive their choice of a free Northwest Summer Fitness Series T-shirt or tank top.

Employees must complete at least three of the four challenges and participate in the in-person August 5k to qualify for their free shirt. Employees who complete both will be entered into a drawing for an additional prize. Shirt signup will begin in July after the series begins.
